We're often asked how we choose what goes on our shelves, and Emma Bridgewater is one of the easiest answers we give. It's handmade, it's genuinely useful rather than purely decorative, and it fits the French country, considered-living feel we've built Villarosa Maison around since 2008 — pieces meant to be used daily rather than kept for best. It also happens to be a brand with real name recognition here in New Zealand, so we regularly meet customers who've admired it overseas or grown up with a piece from a relative, and are delighted to find it stocked locally in Nelson rather than only available through overseas shipping.

Bold black lettering on cream, endlessly versatile, and the pattern most people picture when they think of Emma Bridgewater. Our Black Toast mugs, teapots and tins sit at the centre of the collection for a reason — they mix beautifully with almost everything else in the range.
Hand-sponged spots in primary colour on cream — our Polka Dots mugs, jug and butter dish bring a bit of colour to a kitchen shelf without ever feeling loud. It's one of the easiest patterns to mix with the rest of the range.

This is where the range really earns its keep. The question we get asked most in-store is whether patterns can be mixed, and the answer is always yes — that's rather the point. Emma Bridgewater designs its ranges to sit together: a Black Toast teapot looks entirely at home next to a Polka Dot jug, and a shelf of mismatched mugs in three or four patterns reads as considered rather than chaotic, provided you keep to the cream earthenware base that runs through the whole collection. Our advice to anyone starting out is to buy one piece you genuinely love rather than a boxed "starter set" — a single Black Toast half-pint mug is the classic first purchase, and the collection tends to grow naturally from there as birthdays and Christmases go by.
