There's a particular kind of magic that happens outdoors in the hour after the sun goes down. The heat lifts. Conversation slows and deepens. And if you've got the lighting right, your garden or deck becomes somewhere you genuinely don't want to leave.
Solar lanterns are one of the easiest ways to create that atmosphere — and one of the most underestimated. No wiring, no running costs, no fussing with extension leads at dinner time. Just warm, glowing light that appears on its own when the evening calls for it.
Here's how to style your outdoor space with solar lanterns so the effect feels considered and beautiful rather than afterthought.
Before you think about which lanterns to buy, think about how you actually use your outdoor space. Most Kiwi homes have a few distinct outdoor zones — an entertaining area (deck or patio), a garden or lawn space, pathways, and perhaps a corner that's just for sitting.
Each zone benefits from a different lighting approach:
The entertaining area is where you want warmth and intimacy. Here, lanterns grouped at varying heights create the best effect — think a cluster on the table, a few hanging from a pergola beam, and one or two standing at deck level. The layering is what makes it feel intentional.
Garden beds and pathways benefit from smaller lanterns placed at regular intervals. They don't need to be bright — their job is to define the edge of the space and guide movement, not flood the area with light.
A sitting corner or garden seat deserves a single statement lantern nearby — something that creates its own atmosphere and says this spot is worth lingering in.
The Lumiz lanterns we stock at Villarosa are designed specifically for this kind of layered styling. Made from Tyvek — a remarkably tough, weather-resistant material — they come in 30+ designs ranging from compact 15cm globes to generous 50cm statement pieces.
What makes them special is what happens when the light comes on. The patterned Tyvek casts intricate shadow shapes across nearby surfaces — fences, foliage, table tops — so you effectively get two effects in one: the warm glow of the lantern itself, and a constellation of shadows that move softly in the breeze.
For the best result, mix at least three sizes and two different patterns. The interplay between them creates depth and interest in a way that matching sets simply don't.
A few favourite combinations:
Hang from above. A pergola beam, a pohutukawa branch, a shepherd's hook — even a simple S-hook on a curtain wire strung across the deck. Hanging lanterns at eye height or just above draw the eye upward and make an outdoor space feel more like a room.
Cluster on the table. Three lanterns of different heights grouped on a timber slice or enamel tray look intentional and beautiful. Use an odd number — threes and fives always work better than pairs or fours.
Stand at ground level. Larger Lumiz pieces work well standing directly on a deck, path, or garden bed. Place them where you'd naturally place a potted plant — at the corner of a step, alongside a garden border, framing an entrance.
Mix with greenery. Solar lanterns and living plants are natural companions. Tuck a small lantern among succulents in a pot grouping, hang one near a climbing rose, or nestle one into a herb garden. The light plays differently through foliage, and the effect at night is genuinely lovely.
Lumiz lanterns charge via a small built-in solar panel and switch on automatically at dusk — no timers to set, no switches to find. For best performance, make sure they get a good run of direct sun during the day. In New Zealand's long summer days, a full charge typically gives you eight or more hours of light.
In winter or during extended overcast periods, you can bring them inside to a sunny windowsill to top up the charge, then return them outside when the weather clears. Their IP65 rating means they're dust- and rain-proof — fully suited to year-round NZ conditions including coastal environments.
Outdoor styling is most successful when it feels uncontrived — like the space has been gathered slowly, over time, rather than bought all at once. A few well-chosen lanterns, placed with intention and mixed with natural materials (timber, stone, terracotta, linen), will do more for your outdoor atmosphere than a hundred coordinated accessories.
If you'd like to see the full Lumiz range, you'll find it at villarosanz.co.nz — or come into the store in Nelson and see them in person. We always have them on display, and there's nothing quite like seeing the patterns they cast when the light hits them.
