Lumiz Solar Lanterns

Lumiz Solar Lanterns

There is a moment, just after dusk, when a Lumiz lantern does something that feels almost like magic. The solar panel has been drinking in daylight all day. The light fades. And then — quietly, without any intervention from you — the lantern wakes up and casts its pattern across the deck, the table, the garden wall. Lacy shadows, botanical cut-works, geometric forms that dance a little in any breeze. It is one of those rare products that performs better in real life than it does in a photograph.

We have stocked Lumiz solar lanterns at Villarosa Maison for several years now, and they remain one of the most-talked-about things in the shop. People pick them up, turn them over, ask how they work — and then often buy two. This post is our honest account of what they are, how they perform in the New Zealand climate, and how to choose the right one for your space.

What Is Lumiz?

Lumiz is a Dutch brand — designed in the Netherlands, which explains both the quality of the engineering and the understated elegance of the aesthetic. The lanterns are made from Tyvek, a material that looks and feels like a cross between paper and fabric but is actually a high-density polyethylene fibre. It is weather-resistant, UV-stable, and — importantly for anyone who has lost a paper lantern to a single Nelson downpour — completely waterproof.

Each lantern contains a small integrated solar panel and LED light. Leave it in a sunny spot during the day and it will glow for eight to ten hours after dark. There are no batteries to replace, no wiring, no timer to programme. You put it where you want it, and it does the rest.

The designs — referred to as patterns — are cut into the Tyvek using a precision process that creates a lace-like effect when lit from within. Some are botanical (Folia, inspired by leaves and stems), some geometric (Topaz, Bazaar, Sashiko), some richly ornate (Occult, Mandela, Paisley). At Villarosa, we carry 20-plus patterns across multiple shapes and colourways, and we try to keep a good cross-section in stock year-round.

The Shapes: Which One Is Right for You?

Lumiz makes lanterns in several distinct shapes, each with a different character and best use.

Round (20cm and 30cm) — The most versatile shape in the range and our bestseller. The 20cm rounds are perfect for clustering on a table — group three or five together in different patterns for a cohesive but interesting effect. The 30cm is more of a statement piece: hung from a hook above an outdoor dining table, it becomes the centrepiece of the whole setting. The Round 20cm in Sage Green is a perennial favourite, and the Copper Sashiko has a beautiful warm quality when lit.

Balloon (20cm) — Slightly more gathered at the top, with a softer, rounder silhouette. The Balloon shape tends to read as more relaxed and bohemian than the Round — lovely for a garden party or an informal outdoor setting. The Pink Mosaic Balloon is one of the most popular in the range at the moment.

Tulip (20cm) — Narrower at the base and wider at the top, the Tulip has an elegant, slightly architectural quality. The Grey Blue Fiore Tulip, with its floral cut-work pattern, is genuinely beautiful when lit — a soft, blue-grey glow with delicate shadow work. The Light Taupe Topaz Tulip is a slightly more neutral option that pairs well with natural timber and linen.

Drop (28cm) — The largest and most dramatic shape in the range. Teardrop in form, the Drop lanterns are best hung — from a pergola beam, a shepherds hook, or a verandah joist. The Gold Fiore Drop is one of our most striking pieces: the gold Tyvek with the Fiore floral cut-work casts a warm, amber-toned light that is genuinely beautiful. The Sage Green Spectare Drop is cooler in tone and pairs well with garden settings that have a lot of green foliage.

Long Oval (20cm) — Elongated and slightly unusual in the range, the Long Oval works particularly well as a hanging lantern. The Copper Paisley is a fan favourite — the paisley cut-work is intricate and the copper colourway glows warmly after dark. We often have the Pink Bazaar in stock too, a softer, more romantic option.
