We brought Lumiz solar lanterns into the store on a bit of a hunch — they looked beautiful in photos, but photos never tell you how something actually holds up. A full New Zealand summer later, hung along our own courtyard and tested by more than one customer's garden, we've got some honest thoughts to share. If you're weighing up whether they're worth it, this is the review we wish we'd had before we ordered our first batch.
Lumiz lanterns are designed in the Netherlands and made from Tyvek — a weather-resistant, UV-stable material that's closer to a technical fabric than paper, despite the look. Each lantern has an integrated solar panel that charges through the day and an LED that switches on automatically at dusk, running for eight to ten hours on a good charge. There's no wiring, no batteries to remember, and nothing to plug in — you hang it, or stand it, and it does the rest.
The range covers more than 30 shapes and patterns, from the classic Round through to the dramatic Drop and the architectural Diamond, each cut with an intricate pattern that only really comes alive once the light's behind it.
The Round 20cm in Copper Sashiko was the first one we hung, and it's still the one we'd recommend to someone buying their first Lumiz — a versatile size, and a pattern that reads as fine cut-work rather than anything too busy.
For something with more presence on a table, the Balloon 20cm in Gold Mandela is a small, generous shape that throws a warm, intricate pattern across a tablecloth once the sun's gone down — this is the one that gets the most comments when we have people over.
And for anyone wanting a softer, more playful colour, the Balloon 20cm in Pink Mosaic has been a steady favourite with customers furnishing a deck or a girls'-birthday garden setting.
The honest version: on a clear Nelson summer day, a fully charged lantern will comfortably see you through an entire evening outside, glowing well past the point most guests have gone home. On a run of grey, overcast days — which we do get, even in summer — the charge is noticeably weaker and the light dims earlier in the evening. That's simple solar physics rather than a fault in the product, but it's worth knowing before you rely on one for a specific event.
What's genuinely impressed us is the Tyvek itself. Ours have been through wind, rain, and a fair amount of sun exposure without fading, tearing, or losing their shape — a real point of difference from the paper lanterns we have seen from other suppliers, which might not survive their first wet week outdoors.
For anyone wanting a lantern indoors, or on a shaded patio that doesn't get much direct sun, Lumiz also sell a Battery Module that swaps in for the solar cell, with a remote control available separately — a nice bit of flexibility if a spot in your garden doesn't get enough light to charge reliably.
With more than 30 shapes in the Lumiz range, the question isn't really which one is "best" but which one suits where it's going. The Round and Balloon shapes are the most versatile — compact enough to group on a table or windowsill, easy to hang from a single hook, and forgiving of almost any garden style. The Drop and the Crown are the two we'd call statement pieces: the Drop wants a pergola beam or a shepherd's hook where it can hang properly and become the centrepiece of the space, while the Crown, at 40cm, is the largest shape in the range and genuinely needs room to be seen — a wide verandah or a large sideboard rather than a crowded shelf. The Diamond and Long Oval sit in between, geometric and architectural enough to suit a more contemporary garden, while the softer Lampshade and Jar shapes lean traditional. If you're buying your first one and unsure, a Round or Balloon in a mid-tone colour is the safest, most flexible starting point.
Hung from a shepherd's hook along a garden bed, strung from a pergola beam, or simply grouped in twos and threes along an outdoor table using the metal stand rings — Lumiz lanterns are genuinely flexible about how you use them. Winter's the quiet season for solar lanterns, but it's also the easiest time to plan ahead — Lumiz's peak season here runs roughly October through March, and the popular shapes and patterns do sell through as spring approaches.
