Handcrafted in Portugal by Bordallo Pinheiro, whose artisans have been shaping and glazing earthenware since 1884, each plate carries the subtle variation of the human hand. The cabbage, fleshy and wrinkled, flattened in shape, could serve as a metaphor for the rusticity of Portugal, a country Bordallo satirized so often. It was a clever way of paying homage to it, placing it at the center of bourgeois tables, where, otherwise, it would not have been invited.
