Bordallo Pinheiro Hunting Deer Plate 24cm | NZ

Not all Bordallo Pinheiro is cabbage green. The Hunting Deer Plate steps into earthier territory — hand-painted deer motifs on a warm, deep-toned earthenware ground that feels very much at home in a New Zealand context. Rustic without being rough, decorative without being fussy.

At 24cm it works as a side plate, a generous breakfast plate, or a wall piece displayed alongside other ceramics. The hand-painted detail is characterful and precise — the kind of thing you keep noticing the longer you own it.

Made in Portugal at the Bordallo Pinheiro factory in Caldas da Rainha, where the same family of techniques has been in use since 1884. Each plate is finished by hand, which means the painting has a warmth and slight variation that machine-made ceramics simply can't achieve.

Available in New Zealand from Villarosa Maison in Nelson, one of the country's few dedicated Bordallo Pinheiro stockists. We ship throughout New Zealand.

      Bordallo Pinheiro

The cabbage, fleshy and wrinkled, flattened in shape, could serve as a metaphor for the rusticity of Portugal, a country Bordallo satirized so often. It was a clever way of paying homage to it, placing it at the center of bourgeois tables, where, otherwise, it would not have been invited. And today, our cabbage is an essential element on any table and in any setting, admired by young and old alike, blooming in various colors: Green, White, and Pink!
